This month, Arkansas Imagination Library proudly features the Carroll County Youth Literacy Rotary Foundation (CCYLRF), a dedicated local partner making a lasting impact on early literacy in Carroll County. Since 2013, CCYLRF has been on a mission to inspire children to “Dream More, Learn More, Care More, and Be More” by providing free books to children under five, fostering a love for reading, and strengthening their community.

A Decade of Literacy Impact

CCYLRF’s dedication to Carroll County is undeniable. Over the past 10 years, they’ve mailed more than 53,000 books to 2,402 children under five and distributed over 5,000 additional books to K-3 students. By attending 28+ community events annually, CCYLRF ensures every family has the chance to enroll their children in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Their efforts have resulted in an impressive 66% enrollment rate for eligible children in the county.

A Strong Community Partnership

What started as a Holiday Island Rotary Club initiative has grown into a county-wide effort supported by three Rotary Clubs. CCYLRF also works with local schools and libraries to track the program’s effectiveness. For example, data from Eureka Springs and Berryville school districts show Imagination Library graduates consistently outperform their peers in literacy assessments.

Overcoming Challenges

Carroll County’s diverse population includes many families with limited literacy skills or who speak one of 11+ dialects in the area. CCYLRF addresses this by providing registration forms in multiple languages and supporting adult literacy programs. Additionally, they collaborate with local organizations to ensure transient families and underserved communities don’t miss out on the opportunity to participate.

Upcoming Events

CCYLRF keeps the community engaged through a variety of events across Carroll County’s five cities, including AgriDays, County Fair, and Christmas celebrations with Santa. These events not only promote registration but also distribute books to older children, extending the love of reading beyond age five.

A Personal Passion for Literacy

For CCYLRF members, the mission is deeply personal. As Treasurer Peggy Lodewyks reflects, “Reading is the best type of life insurance—it empowers you to learn, explore, and protect yourself.” It’s this belief in the transformative power of literacy that drives their unwavering commitment.

How You Can Help

CCYLRF is grateful for the support of local schools, businesses, and community members. If you’d like to learn more or support their mission, contact Peggy Lodewyks at 479-244-9595 or email ccyouthliteracy@gmail.com.
