This month, Arkansas Imagination Library proudly highlights Quality of Life Outreach, Inc., our dedicated local partner bringing the magic of books to families across Polk County. Since 2015, they’ve played a key role in building early literacy by enrolling hundreds of children in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
A Mission Rooted in Community Health and Education
Founded in 2007, Quality of Life Outreach addresses a wide range of community needs—from drug prevention to education and wellness initiatives. The organization’s mission is to create a safe, healthy environment through collaboration, education, and outreach. Naturally, supporting early literacy aligned perfectly with their goals.
In 2015, Mary Ditzel approached Quality of Life with the idea to bring Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to Polk County. Thanks to their leadership and local support, the program has grown to serve over 1,300 children—with 657 currently enrolled and 683 graduates to date!
Powerful Local Partnerships
One of the most impactful partnerships has been with Select Realty. After a presentation to the Mena Board of Realtors, Select Realty committed to donating $31.20 for every home sale, enough to cover a full year of books for one child. Their contributions have totaled over $2,200, directly supporting Polk County families and children. “It gives us great pleasure to support this program and Polk County’s children,” said Principal Broker Le-Ann Holmes.
It’s this kind of grassroots support that makes a lasting difference.
Community Impact and Challenges
Feedback from parents, teachers, and caregivers has been overwhelmingly positive. Whether it’s the joy of receiving a book in the mail or the improved early learning outcomes that follow, the benefits of DPIL are clear.
Still, reaching more families remains a challenge. The program currently serves between 63–68% of eligible children, and the team is working hard to reach 70% and beyond. As a rural community, Polk County faces unique outreach barriers, but their Imagination Library committee—comprised entirely of former public school educators—is committed to finding solutions.
What Drives the Team
The motivation is simple: education. With years of classroom experience, the volunteers behind the Polk County Imagination Library understand the power of reading early and often.
“Everyone on our committee has been a teacher,” shared committee member Brenda Miner. “We’ve seen the difference that early exposure to books makes.”
Looking Ahead
In the year ahead, the goal is to consistently reach over 70% of eligible children. With continued support from local donors, schools, businesses, and advocates, Quality of Life Outreach is confident they can keep expanding their impact.
